Rhodes by Danielle Campri
She sat on the crystal platform and watched out toward the horizon. The scheduler, Terrance, would get mad again if he knew she was hovering above the Bermuda, but she had to see it. She pulled her knees up to her chin and wrapped her arms around her legs and waited. The sky had turned violet and the stars had become dim. She was too far from the main land.
She glanced down to see the ocean beneath her. The waves were normal for the day and water clear. The air blew through her auburn hair. She could feel the crisp air against her brown eyes. Then the silence swallowed her thoughts. Copyright © 2013 Danielle Campri
It was the sun's rays. She watched as the world became a vacuum of silence and a new day was being born. The sun was one of things in life that could not be controlled. She watched as the sky became red and faded into orange. She had been the audience to sun's theatrical brilliance several times, but each encounter was different. This time the sun's light spread across the ocean and shaded the world golden. Last time it was more of a reddish color.
The winds began to pick up as she looked farther across the sky to see a cloud approaching. She smiled and whispered to herself, "Terrance." She stood on the crystal platform and noticed the sun had glazed it with a beautiful rainbow of colors. She looked back to the sky to see the cloud moving quickly toward her. She sighed, "I guess its back to the mainland." Copyright © 2013 Danielle Campri
She began to walk on the platform which moved beneath her. She turned to see the storm becoming darker. Picking up her pace, she walked faster as the platform broke piece by piece behind her, only to form a new path toward the mainland in front of her. Suddenly, she heard the crack of thunder, and turned to see the cloud miles away. Faster, she ran only to stumble and cringe at the storm that approached. Lighting struck within a half mile from her platform. Her mouth let out a screech, as she covered her ears from the thunder. The storm was now above her. The mainland was close, but not close enough to chance a lighting strike. Her anger rose from her.
She rose up and yelled, "Terrance, Stop it!" The thunder sounded louder and lightening popped around her. She stood from her cowering position, and held up her hands. The crystal platform formed a box around her. She shouted at the clouds, "Leave me alone! I was coming back!"
The clouds began to part.
Terrance was now standing behind her, "Rhodes, you know that you can not go out alone. You could be captured." His eyes were dark red with anger as he spoke.
"I know, but I feel captured here," Rhodes turned to face him, "When do I get to see the world? When do I get to do what I want to do?" Her hands flew in the air and the box that surrounded her fell back into her platform. Copyright © 2013 Danielle Campri
"Never," Terrance said as the both of them began to walk back to the mainland. "You know that you don't have that luxury. I don't either."
Rhodes questioned her presences in the world. She saw the mainland. The palm trees and white sand of the island mimicked paradise, but she knew what it was. She knew what she was. Rhodes looked back at the sky and saw that the sun had risen higher. The sky was blue. The sea birds had begun to circle to play on the beach for the day.
